TITLE: 07-12-14 - Make-A-Wish, Corvette Car Show | NAME: Vex | TKID: 2151 | DATE: 2014-07-15 17:27:36

The Mississippi Rancor Raiders, famous statewide for Star Wars Charity Costuming, have once again brought marvel and intrigue to the children and adults alike at the Corvette Car Show benefitting Make-A-Wish foundation.

Stunned by the high gloss shine of the dozens of rare corvettes, onlookers also were reminded of the day they first laid eyes on the big screen to see the shiny finish of Darth Vader's helmet.

"I remember the first time I saw Stormtroopers" said Randy Davis of Madison. "I thought how amazing of an imagination of a single man (George Lucas)" Davis added.

Among the cars and spacemen were many vendors peddling their fine wares. One of which was a man selling sweet jalapeños!

Jane Walsh, director and public relations for Make-A-Wish made the statement that kids love the "Star Wars Guys" as much as the cars.

"We seem to think we have an edge over the cars but that's the great thing about these events, there is something for everybody" quipped Stephen Ballenger, Darth Vader Costumer and current Rancor Raider Commanding Officer.

TITLE: The Birth of the Mississippi 501st, July 15, 2007 | NAME: Vex | TKID: 2151 | DATE: 2014-07-15 09:59:40

If Tarkin’s Talons is seen as thinking about having a baby and fooling around, then Mississippi becoming a 501st Outpost was like raising a child up through the ‘terrible twos.’ Somewhere in the middle lay the birth of baby rancor wrapped in a green and black blanket, screaming across the state for all to hear.

It was on July 15, 2007, seven years ago, that Mississippi was officially recognized as a 501st unit and ratified by her parent organization, MidSouth Garrison. The state was now known as the Mississippi Delta Assault Squad.

I made the transition from Mississippi State Captain to the officially elected MDAS Squad Leader. Our crusade for total independence soon began. It was a hard road and a hard fight. We were bombarded from 501st naysayers to the spark of the Imperial-Mandalorian Wars. But in the end, after fighting a trench warfare scenario, clawing and scrapping for every little bit of ground, we succeeded.

My bucket’s off to the old guard and the new vanguard. To those veterans who fought the good fight, to the new recruits that will lead us to the future, I say thank you. Thank you for helping to take an idea someone had in a small apartment in a tiny dusty Delta town and carrying the charge forward.

Bleed Green!

The Rancors attended the Mississippi Braves' Sci-Fi night at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS. The RRG trooped along side of several other groups such as The Rebel Legion, Ghostbusters of Mississippi and Deep South Horror.

Darth Vader threw the first pitch and 30 minutes later the game looked like it was played on Kamino as a thunderstorm moved in. The hard downpour made for some wet troopers and a missed group shot. However thanks to some quick thinking of the Rancor's Typhon Terrors TIE squadron, they were able to swoop in and snag a shot before the storm.

TITLE: Rancor Rewind (06-23-14) - SOPOCU CON | NAME: Vex | TKID: 2151 | DATE: 2014-07-08 10:10:18

Rancor Rewind.... a reflection: Tony Cox asked me at the SOPOCU CON what I must feel when I see what the Rancors did Saturday. Coming from an outpost of one, to a garrison of +50, all I can say is, "I'm damn proud."

It's amazing to look back and see how far the Rancor Raiders have come and watch it grow into something more than you hoped for especially in a state dominated by Joe Sixpack. This convention also was something to behold, not only looking at those who embrace Star Wars but cosplay in general. Mississippi has come a long way and I hope it continues.

I would like to personally give thanks and a pat on the back to our commanding officer, Stephen Ballenger for his time, money and muscle for creating an awesome Blast A Trooper. Looking back on the con, it was great focal point for attendees.

I would also like to say job well done to all the Rancors who came out not only for the garrison but to support the convention and help promote fandom in Mississippi: Stephen Ballenger, Tony Cox, Carrie Bland, Jessica Desi Howard, Lance Barrett, Chris Alan Young, Chris Williams, Andy Love, Josh Cherry, Burell Leach, Staven Haydel, Brady Shorter, Trisha Morace, Paul David King, Heather Williams, Jay Sarrett and Steven Smith plus all their families who were there as well.

Mission Accomplished. "Bleed Green"
