If Tarkin’s Talons is seen as thinking about having a baby and fooling around, then Mississippi becoming a 501st Outpost was like raising a child up through the ‘terrible twos.’ Somewhere in the middle lay the birth of baby rancor wrapped in a green and black blanket, screaming across the state for all to hear.
It was on July 15, 2007, seven years ago, that Mississippi was officially recognized as a 501st unit and ratified by her parent organization, MidSouth Garrison. The state was now known as the Mississippi Delta Assault Squad.
I made the transition from Mississippi State Captain to the officially elected MDAS Squad Leader. Our crusade for total independence soon began. It was a hard road and a hard fight. We were bombarded from 501st naysayers to the spark of the Imperial-Mandalorian Wars. But in the end, after fighting a trench warfare scenario, clawing and scrapping for every little bit of ground, we succeeded.
My bucket’s off to the old guard and the new vanguard. To those veterans who fought the good fight, to the new recruits that will lead us to the future, I say thank you. Thank you for helping to take an idea someone had in a small apartment in a tiny dusty Delta town and carrying the charge forward.
